Two of our longtime players have recently passed away.

Rose Gerstein played bridge in the Wilkes-Barre area for over fifty years before she moved to Richmond, Va three years ago to be with her daughter. Many of our better bridge players attribute their success to Rose's advice. Times Leader Obituary

Louise Pasternak Began playing here in 1994 or 1995 and was an avoid duplicate player until recently when her health began to fail. Times Leader Obituary

We miss them both.

BLAST FROM THE PAST
Back in 1947 a man by the name of Joe Greene wrote a cute little ditty called "Across the Alley From the Alimo" It is about the misadventures of a Pinto Pony and a Navaho Indian. I'm sure that it would not be 'politicly correct' today; but, it is still a very pleasant uptempo swing band song. I hope you listen to the music and read (or maybe even sing) the words.

The page honoring Harry is 'on line'.  To visit the page just click on one of the links to it.  There is one on this page - lower left;  on the WVJCC DBC home page;  on the WVJCC DBC results page;  and, here.

Thanks to the bridgelady for images of Harry, Gloria, and Alan Fierverker.  Thanks to the Wyoming Valley JCC for the image of Gloria and Alan Fierverker in front of the plaque.

"The JCC Bridge Club would like to acknowledge the Fierverker family for the beautiful Life Master plaque recently donated to the JCC Bridge Room.
The original idea for this plaque belonged to the late Harry Fierverker who wanted to honor those local bridge players who attained this lofty national award.  Harry was very proud to have earned this high bridge ranking and greatly admired all his fellow players whose names appear on the plaque.
Shown in the picture are Gloria Fierverker, Harry's wife, and Alan Fierverker, Harry's son.  Gloria, Harry's life long partner in marriage, actually taught Harry to play bridge and was his first bridge partner.  Alan, also a Life Master, teamed with his father, Harry, to become a rare, but very accomplished Life Master's father-son duo.
This plaque will serve as a memorial for Harry and reminder of the love he had for the game and the people in the community with whom he played."

June 9, 2005
The above article appeared in the most recent JCC bulletin.
Harry was one of the nicest person to play bridge with us.  I feel that we need a page on this web site in his memory.  I expect to have it posted soon.

Who Said it

Since the begining of January of this year I have added a number of features to this web site.  I have done this for two reasons. I thought you might enjoy them and I want to keep busy. For those who are not familiar with the new features, they are I try to do the daily postings between 10 PM and 10 AM - (Some days I will post earlier than 10 PM and some days later than 10 AM and I might miss days altogether.)

Today I am adding another new feature. I call it simply 'Who Said It'. I will post a quote one day.  Then give the person who said it the next.  I have two personal favorites and will probably use material from them more that from any other: Mark Twain and Oscar Wilde.

Fran Architzel dies at 85.
Many of the our current players no not know who Al and Fran Architzel were (Al died in 1994). They were very special people. They worked hard to teach, run games, and get folks to tournaments. They were a selfless couple who deserved to be remebered by us. The obituary I am giving you a link to below undestates how much the two of them contributed to bridge in our area.

Today somebody told me that twenty years ago the Architzels went out of there way to visit her in a hospital in New York. The Scranton bridge clubs dedicated there summer Party to Al from 1995 to the last summer party in 2003.

October 11, 2004There are a number of standard and common conventions that many of us either are not familiar with or misuse.  I am not talking about Drury, Burgen Raises or New Minor Forcing. Those are good conventions but conventions like Blackwood, the grand slam force, the lightner double, the SOS redouble and other standard conventions are what I will address.   Every so often I will write a short desciption of one of these common conventions and post it on this web site. I will archive the old articles and notify you of the new.

The first conventions I will address is the SOS Redouble and the Kock-Werner Redouble.C.

I have finally finished (for now) the two cascading menus on the left that I am offering for you to use to navagate this web site, the ACBL web site and as much of the bridge related internet that you might want to investigate.  If I have missed something please let me know.   I will gladly find it, if you can not tell me where it is, and post it to the Blue or Red Monster. Blue is primarily this web site and non-bridge links.   Red it primarily ACBL, District 4, other bridge web sites and Sectional or above tournament (even if the news about them is located on this web site).

What I was trying to do was to put a lot of directions into a small search area.   I hope you can go through the Red Monster and the Blue Monster in about three or four minutes and find what you are looking for. If you can I have accomplished what I wanted to do.  Please let me know if you have a problem finding anything. If you do I will either help you with the cascading menues or change them.

The Steamtown Bridge Club is steaming along. Five table of players partcipated this month - including one table of players who have never played in our unit. Ellen Meade and Clare Durkin - Ellen has played in NEPABA games but this is a first for Claire - were the winners (69%). Wilkes-Barre area players Ally Heffernan and Susan Silverblatt came in second (63.5%); Fran Samuels and Jane Bouselli were third (61%) and Mary B Kelly and Mary Anne Hazzouri were fourth (60%). We also welcome Gloria Melvin, Marie Gallagher and Vera Pugh to bridge in the NEPABA.

If you and your favorite partner are both not lifemasters yet the next game will be on Friday November 12 at the Scranton Club. Dave Hall takes the lead in the 365 day masterpoint race.
Dave Hall becomes the fourth member of unit 120 to lead in the 'never ending' 365 day masterpoint race. Former leaders are Judy Null, Ray Depew and Norman Dressler. The 365 day masterpoint race is the winner of the most masterpoint in the clubs that are part of this web site in the imediate prior 365 days. It is 'never ending' because each day represent a new 365 day period (366 days until March 1st of next year).

The real test of a bridgeplayer isn't in keeping out of trouble, but in escaping once he's in... .Alfred Sheinwold

Attitude determines how well you do it.

    Barry Cranes Commandments:
    1. Never pull partners penalty double.
    2. Always take a sure profit.
    3. Watch out for the three level.
    4. The more you bid, the more you got (no fast arrival here).
    5. 7's are singletons.
    6. Don't bid grand slams at Swiss Teams.
    7. Don't put cards in partner's hand.
    8. (Only) Jesus saves.
    9. Don't eat between sessions.
    10. Never ask "How's your game ?".
    11. Never gloat.
    12. The queen is over the jack in the minors and under the jack in the majors.

Card sense is when it's technically right to do something, the little man that sits on my shoulder or anyone else's shoulder says, "Don't do that." And you say to yourself, "Well, wait a minute, that's the right way to play." And he says, "Yeah, but you don't wanna play that way." That instinct is card sense. It's almost an ability to feel where the cards are. It's something that you can't buy, you can't find; you're born with it. The ability to do the right thing at the wrong time or really to do the wrong thing at the right time...     ~ Barry Crane

    Grant Blaze's Guides:
    1. Your partner is your best friend.
    2. Trumps speak.
    3. With 6-5, come alive.
    4. Three notrump ends all auctions.
    5. The 5-level belongs to the opponents.
    6. Aces, spaces, and his majesty's faces.

    THE FROZEN BALL THEORY

A little more than a quarter of a century ago, Tug McGraw, a very witty baseball player and a great relief pitcher who played with the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies came up with the 'Frozen Iceball Theory'.   Tug Said:

"Ten million years from now, when the sun burns out and the Earth is just a frozen iceball hurtling through space, nobody's going to care whether or not I got this guy out."

The frozen iceball theory applies to all situations.   Who will care if we beat that four heart contract last Sunday in Shamokin Dam?   Who will care if the director let us play the last board or not?   And;   Who will care if an idiot was President of the United States for eight years.

"If you think education is expensive, try ignorance." - Derek Bok (1930-), Harvard University President

    Guns aren't lawful, nooses give;
