I'm not sure whether glory or masterpoints is first on the list, but I know learning to play better is definitely last. It's not whether you win or lose. it's how you place the blame - Thanks to Judy Stein, Laporte PA During a high stakes game one day, the legendary bridge player Alvin Roth and his partner found themselves defending a "7 no trump" contract which required their opponents to win every single trick. On the third last trick, the declarer (sitting in the East position, with the ace and king in the dummy hand) led the jack of spades. Roth's partner (sitting in the South position) unethically hesitated before playing his card; he hemmed and hawed, pulling out one card and then another, before finally playing low to the jack. The declarer, assuming that South must have the queen let the jack ride. Though Roth in fact possessed the queen and (playing last) could have won the trick (and thus the hand), he opted instead to play a lower card. His opponents won the trick and (with the ace and king from the dummy hand) easily made their no trump contract... After the game, Roth was upbraided by his partner for blowing the game: "For God's sake, Alvin," he exclaimed, "why didn't you take the queen?" Roth, a famously ethical player, stared the man down and wrily replied, "I thought you had it." [This is one of Eddie Kantar's favorite stories.]

February 19, 2008 (August 9, 1938 - February 14, 2008) The bridge community has lost one of its finest players. Frank Jordan died at 3:00 AM last Thursday. I have known Frank Jordan for almost twenty years. He has always impressed me with his friendly and mild ways. I have never heard Frank say anything bad about anybody and his sense of humor was unparalleled. Frank was always willing to help. I remember when Elfric Martin was living win the Wesley Village and unable to go to bridge tournaments on his own. Frank was there at least once a month to play bridge with him and to take him to many of our local tournaments. Somebody once described a person to me in this way: 'Everybody knew that they were his favorite'. That statement also applied to Francis Jordan. GWM Dr. Francis X. Jordan, Associate Professor, Department of English The Scranton Times Tribune February 14, 2008 Judy Null, Kingston has set a new record for the month of January in the NEPABA with 23.98 masterpoints won in NEPABA clubs. After the war, Mr. Roth moved back to New York City and was working full time in bridge. But he went to Miami Beach for a tournament and fell in love with the city. He called his wife, the former Fay Edelstein, whom he married in 1940, and told her to pack up and join him. Mr. Roth opened a bridge club in Miami and ran it for about five years. Then the couple moved to Washington to work with Charles Goren, founding the Charles Goren School of Bridge. After 10 years, Mr. Roth returned to New York and bought the Mayfair Club, a private card club, which he managed until retiring to Boca Raton in 1995. Mr. Roth’s most famous partnership was with Mr.Tobias Stone. They bid using their Roth-Stone system, many aspects of which have been adopted by present-day tournament players, like five-card majors, a one-no-trump response to a one-heart or one-spade opening that is forcing for one round, and negative doubles. An innovative theoretician, Mr. Roth also conceived the Unusual No-Trump. Mr. Roth played in three Bermuda Bowl world team championships, in 1955, 1958 and 1967, each time winning a silver medal. He was also second in the 1968 World Team Olympiad. During the 1955 Bermuda Bowl, Mr. Roth was declaring a two-spade contract and felt he had played the deal before — but as a defender. He called over the chief tournament director, Al Sobel, who did not believe Mr. Roth because the cards had been dealt at the table. Mr. Sobel made Mr. Roth call out all of the cards in each hand — including the spot-cards — before he threw out the board. No one ever discovered how the duplicate deal happened. Mr. Roth wrote “Al Roth on Bridge: The Roth-Stone System” (1953) and “Picture Bidding” (1991), and was co-author of “Bridge Is a Partnership Game” (1958), “Modern Bridge Bidding Complete” (1968) and “Bridge for Beginners” (1970). Mr. Roth was a grand life master of the American Contract Bridge League with 12,604.36 master points and a world life master of the World Bridge Federation. He was inducted into the American Contract Bridge League Hall of Fame in 1995. . . . Mr. Roth was on magazine bidding panels, most notably for The Bridge World for more than 50 years, where he was famous for saying what he would call and explaining his choice with, “What’s the problem?” But one time in a tournament Mr. Roth did misbid a hand. He was teased unmercifully by fellow experts and finally lashed back with, “Well, Babe Ruth struck out, too.” Afterward, he was known as Babe Roth.
